The South Carolina Tennis Patrons Foundation and USTA South Carolina are proud to announce that Mary Carlisle White Gambill and Ann Hunt will be the 2022 inductees into the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame.
Gambill, a graduate of the University of Florida, was a highly ranked junior player and at one point was ranked in the top five nationally in Girls18. She was a Silver Medalist in singles at the U.S. Junior Olympic Festival and a semi-finalist in the Canadian Open Juniors. She competed in the 1995 and 1996 U.S. Open juniors’ championship; the 1996 Australian Open; the 1996 French Open and was a semi-finalist in the 1996 Wimbledon Open juniors in doubles.
She was manager of USTA’s Special Events department, overseeing logistics of the USA Davis Cup, USA Fed Cup, Olympics, and Pan Olympics events and teams. She was a member of the USTA team managing the U.S. Open annually in New York and was team leader of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. The same year, she managed the specifics of the U.S. Davis Cup in Spain.
Hunt is a native of Oxford, England, and grew up playing on grass courts. Equally skilled in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, Hunt began playing in national tournaments in 2013. In just seven years, she won five national championships.
Hunt currently serves as USTA Southern captain of the 75s, 80s and 85s teams for intersectional. She competes and succeeds at USTA’s highest level in her age group and has compiled five gold balls, nine silver balls and nine bronze balls. In 2018, Ann finished the year ranked No. 1 nationally in singles and No. 3 in doubles in the 75s.
“Ann and Mary Carlisle epitomize sportsmanship and accomplishment in tennis,” said James McKissick, SCTPF chairperson. “The South Carolina Tennis Patrons Foundation is thrilled to honor these remarkable women and appreciate all they have done for the sport.”
Gambill and Hunt are the 74th and 75th Hall of Fame inductees. Their achievements will be celebrated at the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, in Columbia, during the 2022 Annual Meeting weekend for USTA South Carolina.
The South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame and exhibit are located in the historic train depot in Belton and is open to the public.
USTA South Carolina is a state branch of the United States Tennis Association. USTA SC is one of nine states in the USTA’s Southern Section.
