Chuck Kreise

Chuck Kreise played collegiate tennis at Tennessee Tech and was Captain and Most Valuable Player during his senior season. He was named to the all Ohio Valley Conference team and selected an Outstanding Athlete of America.

Chuck Kreise earned his professional training under the legendary Harry Hopman, who coached the Australian Davis Cup team for 20 years.

He was hired as head coach of the Clemson University men’s tennis team in 1975. He has lead his team from the bottom of the ACC standing to appearances in the last six NCAA tournaments.

After nine seasons at Clemson, he had an overall record of 221-98, a winning percentage of .693. In ACC play he is now 44-14, a winning percentage of .759. In the last six seasons his records have been particularly good and include an incredible 39-1 mark in ACC play. His teams have not lost a home match in their region since March 1978.

He became the first Clemson coach in any sport to be named NCAA National Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 1981 season.

He is also one of the few coaches in the nation whose player’s graduation rate is higher than his overall winning percentage. Eighty eight percent of his student athletes have a graduated during his nine seasons.

He coached the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team in the summer of 1980 & 1981.

He coached the South team at the National Sports Festival in 1983.

He has been very active in college tennis administration, serving as secretary of the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association, chairman of the National Coaches Poll, Chairman of the News and Results Committee, co-chairman of the Membership Committee and chairman of the Senior Awards Committee.

He serves as an instructor in Clemson’s Department of Recreation and Park Administration.
